Our winery's agricultural history has deep roots
Jones Winery, located in Shelton, Connecticut, is an integral part of the Jones Family Farms' rich history.
Over 160 Years of Farming These Lands
The Jones family started farming this land in 1858 with farm founder Philip James Jones. Originally, the farm focused on dairy farming, which was common in New England at the time. In the mid-20th century, the farm began transitioning away from dairy production and focused more on growing Christmas trees and berries, which brought in visitors looking for seasonal produce and experiences.
New Venture from the Sixth Generation
The beginning of our winery began in 1999 when Jamie Jones, a sixth-generation farmer and graduate of Cornell University, returned to the family farm and planted his first acre of vineyard. Watching the successful growth of the vineyard, Jamie established the Jones Winery in 2003. With his wife Christiana, they opened a modest tasting room the following year. Seeing the interest in the winery continue to grow, they soon renovated the 19th century barn to become the new Tasting Room. The family also built the farm's Harvest Kitchen, a place to create farm-made food with local produce. In 2017, the winery built the lovely pavilion, entirely crafted from wood grown at the farm, in commemoration of Philip Jones, the family's fourth generation farmer.
Growth and Recognition
Our winery is well known for crafting wines that reflect the region’s distinct terroir - our winemakers are proud to feature our grapes and Connecticut fruit in our wine. Our grape varieties include classic European vinifera, such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Cabernet Franc. With the Jones family's renowned experience growing berries for over 50 years, the winery also creates wonderfully distinctive fruit wines, such as a delightful sparking strawberry wine and a sumptuous blueberry dessert wine.
Over the years, Jones Winery has earned numerous accolades for its wines, helping to boost its reputation in Connecticut and beyond. The winery has become a popular destination on the Connecticut Wine Trail, a network of vineyards and wineries in the state.
